Newport News-based military shipbuilder Fortune 500 Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has promoted Matt Mulherin Jr. to vice president of contracts for its Newport News Shipbuilding division. He took on the role on Monday.
âMatt, a second generation shipbuilder, brings to this role over 17 years of business management and leadership experience,â Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin said in a statement.
Mulherin will be responsible for contracts, pricing, export / import licensing and compliance for Newport News Shipbuilding. He will report to Don Godwin, vice president of business management and chief financial officer of Newport News Shipbuilding.
He started at Newport News Shipbuilding in 2004 as a financial analyst and was commercial director for the Virginia Block III class submarine program. Mulherin has also held commercial leadership roles for the submarine and aircraft carrier programs, and most recently was program director for Doris Miller and future aircraft carriers.
Mulherin holds a BA in Finance from Virginia Tech and an MBA from William & Mary.
He succeeded Christie Thomas, who has been appointed vice president of investor relations.
HII is the country’s largest military shipbuilding company, with more than 44,000 employees worldwide. More than 20,000 of these employees work for the Newport News Shipbuilding division of HII, the state’s largest industrial employer. HII reported 2020 revenue of $ 9.36 billion and third quarter 2021 revenue of $ 2.3 billion.
